Thomas (Jake) and Carol Jacobs of Virginia Beach recently won the Grand Prize — a free Sunroom!

Congratulations to our 2004 Sunroom Sweepstakes Winners!

Recently we sat down with Jake and Carol Jacobs of Virginia Beach a few months after their free sunroom was finished.

Thank you for seeing us today. Tell us about your history in this home.

Carol:  We've owned this home for 25 years and have lived here since 1990.

Jake:  We've done lots of improvements over the years including the kitchen, bath, siding, roofing, a deck on the side yard and window replacements.

Had your ever won anything before?

Carol:  Only $25 at bingo a long time ago.

How did you enter our sweepstakes?

Jake:  We were at the Home Show at the Virginia Beach Pavilion last summer and ran into your display. Carol didn't want me to but I decided to enter anyway — you never know.

How did you find out that you had won?

Carol:  I got a phone call in January from Melani Brothers. Rick Menendez with Melani Brothers kept telling me that we had won a free sunroom. I was very skeptical — I was waiting to find out what the catch was.

Jake:  When I heard about it from Carol all I could think was: When I see it up then I'll believe it.

What happened next?

Carol:  Rick and Bill Sherwood with Melani Brothers came out, took pictures and studied our property.

Jake:  We were still waiting for the catch. But the whole experience was a lot different than we had expected. It was like we had already bought it — not like getting leftovers.

Our house was a bit of a challenge to attach a sunroom to. We didn't have a back door where we wanted the room to go. To our surprise they offered to add a breakthrough slider from our den and finish the back wall in the sunroom.

Carol:  Plus they offered to build it as a 9-foot cathedral with a beautiful fan and porch light as well.

What was the build-out experience like for you?

Jake:  From the first phone call to the last person to come out, everyone did what they said they'd do. My experience has been that even when you pay for a product you don't really get what you want. Everything was first class from the quality in the product to the service provided.

How has this changed the way you use your home?

The Jacobs love their free sunroom

Carol:  We had never used our backyard before — only the side yard. Now we use our sunroom every day and have a great backyard as well. We love to read the morning paper and have coffee out here.

Jake:  We have a TV here and the new slider from the den makes that room feel bigger as well. And, we just love the sound the rain makes.

Any advice for our readers?

Carol:  We were at the Pembroke Mall recently and chatted with your person there. A lady came up and said that people never win sweepstakes like this. She was shocked when we told her that we had won one. We gave the lady our phone number.

Jake:  At every opportunity I'll mention: "Don't be skeptical like we were." You can win!
